League Play Within the City

Without sacrificing quality or competition, the Club Team programs offer high performance baseball players between the ages of 13-19, a highly competitive non-travel option. Babe Ruth Calgary offers AAA, AA, A and 54/80 Club Team programs that play within the City of Calgary. Players are evaluated and drafted each year. Our draft is based on skill level, not age, so every player is playing at their competitive level.  All Babe Ruth players must be at least 13 years of age by May 1st in the season in which they are registering to play, and players cannot turn 20 years of age during the calendar year in the season in which they are registering to play. For players in the 10-12 year of age range, please check out Alberta Cal Ripken at www.albertacalripken.ca

Bigger fields offer bigger opportunities

For some players new to our league, it is a big jump from Little League programs.  Babe Ruth Calgary plays on 60ft mounds and 90ft baselines, which can be a huge difference for a new player moving into in this age group. We also offer our 54/80 Division for new players coming out of Little League which can greatly aid in the transition to the larger diamond. Babe Ruth Calgary expects that every player will work hard to earn their field time by dedicating themselves at practice and giving 100% during games.

Babe Ruth Calgary has the opportunity to play on some of the best baseball diamonds in the city. Most of our diamonds have grass infields, lights for night games, scoreboards, covered dugouts and batting cages.  As an organization we have arranged long-term agreements with the City of Calgary and have access to Optimist, Glenmore, Lynnwood, Shouldice and New Brighton Athletic Parks for the majority of our on-field events.

Smaller Roster Sizes

Babe Ruth Calgary has traditionally held smaller roster sizes than many other organizations in and around the city. Players

Coaching and Technical Directors

Our coaching volunteers have diverse baseball backgrounds with a wealth of playing & coaching experience at various levels. The foundation of our coaching volunteers is more than 50 volunteers including many college alumni. Miki Kawahara, Executive Director and Head Technical Director, was an academic All-Canadian playing at the NWAACC level. He has coached the BC Junior Premier Baseball League and also the 2009 Canada Cup (Team Alberta 17U) team.

Our technical directors bring years of experience and a deep understanding of the game to support coaches and help players refine their skills and build game intelligence.

Travel Teams

Babe Ruth Calgary runs a total of four summer travel teams comprised of the top players from within our Spring league. All of these teams have an entry into the Babe Ruth Pacific Northwest Regional tournament, with the ultimate goal of advancing to the Babe Ruth World Series

There are two Longhorn Travel Teams and two Blues Travel Teams that play at the AA and AAA level. The fees for the travel teams are separate from the Spring League, and those fees are determined each year based on the number of tournaments teams are attending.

Our Summer Travel Teams operate concurrently with the league schedule so their Travel Team practices/games do not interfere with their Spring League schedule. Evaluations for Summer Travel Teams are held in May once the Spring Season is underway. These travel teams will play in 2-3 tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest region (US and Canada), and will attend the week-long Babe Ruth Pacific Northwest Regionals tournament in July. Practice frequency is one night per week (usually Mondays).

Premier Teams

Our 16U Premier Team is comprised of our league's top players in the 14-16 year old age group. This Premier Team has a nine month training experience at the AAA level, and will play in tournaments throughout Western Canada and the USA. They will also play a half schedule in our league's top AAA Division.

Our 18U Premier Team is comprised of our league's top players within the 15-18 year old age group. This Premier Team has a nine month training experience at the AAA level and plays a full tournament schedule throughout Western Canada and the USA.

Umpire Clinics

Babe Ruth Calgary runs their own umpire training clinics.  It is important to have at least some understanding of baseball, but if you're a player, alumni, parent, relative or anyone else wanting to be part of the action and learn to become an umpire, it is a great opportunity. Umpiring games is a fantastic way to earn some extra money while participating in the game that we all love.

College Recruitment

Starting the college recruitment process may seem like a daunting task, but with the advice from Babe Ruth Calgary, it doesn’t have to be! We are here to help you from start to finish. This is an exciting time and does require a lot of work but is definitely worth it.

Affiliated Winter Training Program

There are winter training programs run by a number of organizations.  Our friends at Diamondawgs, headed by Miki Kawahara, is one organization that offers off-season training, which is a unique opportunity for players to make significant adjustments to their game without having to compete, at the same time, in game situations. Registration is done directly through Diamondawgs.
